The end of summer is always a bittersweet time. It is packed with fairs, canning produce, and outdoor activities. We want to soak up those last few days before the kids go back to school and the weather cools off.

The school year brings a more settled routine than summer. After a summer filled with transition, cabin days, and a full calendar, I am ready for some consistency myself.

I find that transition times always lend themselves to rest and reflection. As we enter the fall, what are our priorities? What things can we let go of? As the leaves fall, they invite us to let go of any burdens, grudges, or time wasters. Jesus’ invitation to follow him looks different in each season of our lives. Yet, we can always return to walking with our teacher and savior.

My first Sunday here, I preached on Matthew 11: 28-30. I reflected on how the rhythms of grace guide our life together. God doesn’t call us to anything that is ill fitting because Jesus’ yoke is easy and light. As we close out summer, I find myself returning to this invitation from Jesus. What is He inviting you to in the fall that will fit who you are and give you rest with God?

“Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
