L.O.V.E. Project
In 2009, 27 families were served in this area.

The L.O.V.E. (Lots of Volunteer Effort) Project is a community-wide project to distribute gifts of clothing, toys, food and toiletries to Pine Island area families in need during the Christmas holidays.  This activity was organized over 15 years ago.  We are participants of the Goodhue County Christmas Project.  All families in the Christmas Project are referred through the Department of Social Services and Public Health.  Because Pine Island is a tri-county area, we also receive family referrals from Dodge County Social Services and Pine Island Sharing Shelves.
Many Pine Island area organizations and groups donate funds to operate the L.O.V.E. Project.  With these funds, we purchase food to supply a holiday meal and toiletries items.  St. Paul’s Lutheran Church has a Sharing Tree in which the congregation provides clothing for these families.  Hats, mittens and gloves are collected by various groups to be distributed to these families.  The Toys for Tots in Red Wing provides the toys for the children.  The toys collected for Toys for Tots around town and in the public school go to Red Wing to be distributed.  Local people have furnished us with quilts and blankets that add a warm touch to give to the families.
The Pine Island United Methodist Church serves as the organizer of this event.   The Goodhue County Christmas Project contacts us with families who need to be served in our area.  We then notify these families that we have received their applications and inform them of the date of pick-up or delivery.  Clothes sizes are given to the Lutheran Church.  Food and toiletries are purchased.  The night before delivery, we assemble each family’s gifts of clothes, food, toys and toiletries.  We have area groups assist us with this activity.  It is the efforts of the community volunteers and supporters that help to fulfill this mission.

Pine Island Sharing Shelves
The purpose of the Pine Island Sharing Shelves is to provide a food bank for people who reside in the public school district of Pine Island.
Sharing Shelves offers people in need the opportunity to shop and choose food on a weekly basis. Sharing Shelves also serves families in emergency situations.

Flowers For Friends-April 10, 2010-45 flowers/pots were distributed!!
Flowers For Friends was started by the Missions Committee in 2002 as an outreach mission to our shut-in church members. We visitsed 15 members and brought them a small vase of cut flowers to let them know the church was thinking of them. We decided to do this annually in the spring.  We also added not only those members who were unable to attend church, but who had a challenging year or event such as health issues or loss of a partner or loved one. In 2006, we had the congregation sign up to assist in delivering the floweres for the list of 15 had expanded to 45. We found that visiting with our members was the true mission and the flowers were a token of our church's love.

Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child is the UK's largest children's Christmas appeal and has been running for over 19 years. Thanks to a huge army of volunteers who give their time to help make this Christmas 'miracle' come to life, gift-filled shoeboxes are delivered to children in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
The shoeboxes aredelivered by hand to children who need it most. Last year, through Operation Christmas Child, over 1.2 million shoeboxes packed full of gifts and goodies were wrapped, packed and sent to children in disadvantaged situations.

Zimbabwe Irrigation Project in memory of Jon Dileo:

Jon Dileo passed away at age 18 in 2008 of complications from brain cancer. His dream was to have the children at the Melfort Orphanage in Zimbabwe have fresh water through irrigation. PIUMC has provided financial support in order to obtain his young dream. PIUMC further continues to support this mission by donating clothing to the orphange. Zimbabwe Orphange Project:

Nov 3, 2009:
The work at Melfort is progressing well. Trenching is currently under way and should be complete tomorrow Wednesday (Nov 4, 2009). The laying of pipes and sprinklers will commence immediately thereafter. We envisage the project to be complete by end of next week.
Peter Mabasa, Pastor at Melfort Orphanage

Oct 10, 2009:
The first shipment of clothes for the Melfort Orphanage, is going out to Alexandria tomorrow. We have almost as much for the next batch, and are just starting collections at some of the high schools!
A church there is collecting for shipping items in a container, which may go out in a couple of months.
Thanks,

Aug 26, 2009: Email from Steve (Jons father):
Thought you’d be interested in seeing the church link for clothing collection for the Zim orphanage…still working on getting the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s contribution finalized (they don’t send things to Zimbabwe very often, it seems).
Thanks.

Heifer International
By giving families a hand-up, not just a hand-out, we empower them to turn lives of hunger and poverty into self-reliance and hope.
With gifts of livestock and training, we help families improve their nutrition and generate income in sustainable ways. We refer to the animals as “living loans” because in exchange for their livestock and training, families agree to give one of its animal’s offspring to another family in need. It’s called Passing on the Gift – a cornerstone of our mission that creates an ever-expanding network of hope and peace.
